Types of care

In-home care: help where someone already lives.

Many people want to stay at home as long as they can. Washington licenses two main kinds of agencies that provide care at home, and they do different things.

Home care and home health are different

A home care agency provides non-medical services, such as help with personal care, housekeeping and respite for family caregivers.

A home health agency provides health services such as nursing, therapy and home health aide services.

Both are licensed by the Washington State Department of Health as in-home services agencies.

When a move may be worth considering

In-home care works best when the hours needed are predictable and the home is safe. When someone needs help around the clock, or overnight supervision, a residential setting may give more consistent support. Compare the cost of both before deciding.

Common questions

Can we combine in-home care with a later move?

Yes. Many families start with a few hours of help at home and revisit the decision as needs change. Planning ahead gives you time to visit homes before a move is urgent.
